2016 Inward Review: Adsense - Updated Concern Human Relationship Interface, Improve Communication, Novel Refer Types

AdSense had or thence solid updates inwards 2016. The AdSense concern human relationship interface got a makeover as well as at that topographic point were novel advertizing formats. And at that topographic point was much amend communication, alongside the destination of "becoming to a greater extent than transparent as well as accessible to the online marketing community."

My exceed AdSense updates for 2016:

Fake News supported past times AdSense

One of the big stories of 2016 was the proliferation of mistaken intelligence sites. These are sites that be exclusively for the advertizing revenue - the "news" they issue is made upwards as well as optimized for clicks. They got a boost when credulous people  - including politicians - shared the articles equally if they were real.  It was neat for the enterprising Macedonian teenagers (and others) who created the sites, non thence neat for political discourse.

In response, AdSense policy was updated to prohibit mistaken intelligence sites (and Facebook banned mistaken intelligence sites from using its advertising network too).

Ad Blockers

2016 was also the twelvemonth that advertising platforms fought dorsum against advertizing blockers. AdSense has pretty much stayed out of the fray, but inwards August at that topographic point was an amusing few weeks where   Adblock Plus had establish a means to shell Facebook's adblocker-blocker. Facebook thence rolled out code to Google chop-chop refuted. And thence Adblock clarified they were never selling ads, they simply desire publishers to use ads from i of their "Acceptable Ads" providers (which doesn't include AdSense). This doesn't appear similar a win for publishers to me.

AdSense's take is that advertizing blockers are indeed a concern, as well as they desire to operate inside the manufacture to develop standards "that let sites as well as publishers to non stimulate got their ads blocked" piece "investing inwards amend ads experiences"

The state of war volition probable rage on through 2017 as well as beyond.

Meanwhile, I'm hoping for or thence variety of resolution that allows Publishers similar me to display ads without annoying my site's visitors to the indicate where they experience similar all ads demand block.

2014 Yr Inward Review: Youtube As Well As Google+ Closer Than Ever

In 2014 YouTube in addition to Google+ integration actually took off. On November 6, 2013 YouTube switched to the novel Google+-based commenting system. Over the yesteryear twelvemonth YouTube in addition to Google+ became fifty-fifty to a greater extent than tightly entwined. YouTube in addition to Google+ introduced a lay out of novel features, piece nosotros said goodbye to others (RIP YouTube Inbox).

There was a alter at the top for both products. At YouTube Susan Wojcicki - formerly Google SVP for advertising - took over from Salar Kamangar, piece over on Google+ Vic Gundotra was replaced yesteryear quondam Google+ VP of Engineering Dave Besbris. I recollect it's withal also early on to nation whether that represents a meaning shift inwards direction, but their interviews at Re/code give a feel of management things are heading:
There are also at i time to a greater extent than refined comment management options. Filter comments yesteryear individuals or Google+ circles, or yesteryear keywords.

You tin give the axe also select which comments to highlight on your channel, hold upward it commenters amongst 1000+ subscribers or those comments from your subscribers in addition to fans.

Google+ Audience Settings in addition to Improved Blocking

Over the course of study of the year, Google+ has provided to a greater extent than tools for controlling who tin give the axe run into your Google+ posts in addition to add together y'all to their Google+ circles. Since YouTube comments are also Google+ posts, these settings may also acquit on who tin give the axe run into your comments (at to the lowest degree those shared to Google+).

You tin give the axe at i time bound the "audience" for your Google+ Profile or Google+ Page yesteryear historic catamenia in addition to geographical location. If y'all solely desire Australians older than 50 to run into your content, y'all tin give the axe practise that! Currently this solely blocks restricted users from viewing your Google+ posts - they tin give the axe withal run into your comments on posts in addition to photos.

Learn more:
You tin give the axe also block Pages in addition to Profiles on Google+. If y'all block someone:
  • you are removed from each others circles, in addition to the blocked profile can't add together y'all dorsum to their circles
  • they can't run into your posts or comments in addition to y'all can't run into their posts
  • they can't contact y'all via Google+ or Google Hangouts
Be aware, though, that someone y'all direct blocked on Google+ can comment on your videos, in addition to y'all won't hold upward able to run into what they've posted. To forbid people you've blocked from commenting on your videos, also ban in addition to thus inwards your YouTube channel's community settings.

Learn more:

YouTube Messages replaces the YouTube Inbox

In June YouTube introduced private Messages, which replaces the old YouTube Inbox. The novel organisation is Google+ based, which way your channel must hold upward connected to Google+ to ship or have messages.

The novel messaging organisation also has some limitations: y'all tin give the axe solely ship a message to i channel at a time, in addition to y'all cannot delete your sent messages.

For grouping private messaging amongst to a greater extent than options, y'all at i time take to portion a private ship service on Google+ amongst people, pages or circles.

New Custom URLs for Google+ Pages, Profiles and, now, YouTube channels

In Oct 2013, Google+ expanded the availability of vanity URLs to most Google+ Profiles in addition to Pages. Unlike some social networking sites, y'all don't direct the choice to select y'all ain custom URL, instead your eligible Page or Profile is offered i or to a greater extent than choices based on the name, linked website, in addition to other factors.

In November, YouTube adopted the same custom URL system. Now your YouTube channel volition direct the same vanity ID every bit the Google+ Profile or Page it's connected to. This is an chance for older channels to switch to a unlike custom URL, amongst the limitation that your solely URL options are those offered to y'all yesteryear Google+ in addition to YouTube.

Google+ URL: plus.google.com/+Example
YouTube channel URL: www.youtube.com/c/Example (note the /c/ inwards the URL)

You may hold upward offered a URL based on the eligibility of your Google+ Page or Profile, eligibility of your YouTube channel, or both. If your Google+ Page already has a custom URL, the connected YouTube channel already has a new-style URL. If not, your eligible channel amongst a linked website or at to the lowest degree 500 subscribers may hold upward offered one.

Older /user/ YouTube URL volition proceed to work, in addition to take non correspond the novel custom URL.

 YouTube Creator Studio Mobile App

In June YouTube rearranged the navigation on YouTube channels, introducing the novel "Creator Studio", where y'all tin give the axe discovery links to all your creator tools, including your video manager, comment moderation, YouTube Analytics in addition to the video editor.

YouTube also released the YouTube Creator Studio mobile app, bringing to your telephone or tablet. The novel app lets y'all read in addition to filter comments, reckon basic analytics in addition to update your video details in addition to settings. You tin give the axe also larn notifications when at that topographic point are notable changes to your channels viewership or subscribers.

It's withal missing a lot of functionality that is withal solely available on the desktop, but it's a expert kickoff towards managing your channel piece out in addition to about.

Google+ Profile Name Policy Update: (almost) whatsoever shout goes

When Google+ started out inwards 2011, existent names were required. In 2012 that policy shifted to require "name-shaped" names (plus.google.com/+YonatanZunger/posts/YJbzDptWGQt). Finally, inwards July of this twelvemonth the Google+ profile shout policy was updated so that almost whatsoever shout goes - fifty-fifty unmarried discussion names, draw of piece of employment concern names, in addition to clearly made-up pseudonyms. Google+ apologized for the difficulties caused yesteryear the master copy policy:
We know you've been calling for this alter for a while. We know that our names policy has been unclear, in addition to this has led to some unnecessarily hard experiences for some of our users. For this nosotros apologize, in addition to nosotros promise that today's alter is a pace toward making Google+ the welcoming in addition to inclusive house that nosotros desire it to be. Thank y'all for expressing your opinions thus passionately, in addition to thank y'all for continuing to build Google+ the thoughtful community that it is.
YouTube channels direct never been required to hold upward connected to a Google+ Profile amongst a existent name, despite what some poorly-informed reporters direct claimed. But this novel policy at i time makes it much clearer that y'all tin give the axe utilization pretty much whatsoever shout y'all want.

What that way is that YouTuber creators at i time tin give the axe to a greater extent than easily select betwixt using a Google+ Page or a Google+ Profile for their channel identity.

And but a few weeks ago, Google+ announced that the sex on Google+ Profiles is at i time completely customizable (plus.google.com/118279113645730324236/posts/FKK2trDERAC). Your Google+ Profile tin give the axe at i time ameliorate stand upward for y'all the way y'all desire to hold upward known.

Google My Business for Google+ Pages

In June Google introduced "Google My Business". This isn't but a re-branding of Google+ Pages; Google also introduced novel tools for draw of piece of employment concern owners in addition to brands.

I lay together an overview of the new features of particular involvement to YouTube creators, which include:
  • create a novel Google+ Brand Page
without having to create a Google+ Profile

  • new Google+ Page dashboard amongst Analytics in addition to Insights
  • new Google app launcher for Google+ Pages
  • new Google My Business app for managing Google+ Pages in addition to viewing Insights information on mobile devices

    • Learn more:

Import your videos from Google+ to YouTube

Finally, y'all tin give the axe at i time easily import your videos from your Google+ Profile or Page to your connected YouTube channel. That lets y'all utilization YouTube's video editor, add together a custom thumbnail, unopen captions in addition to more.

You tin give the axe import videos to a YouTube channel that's connected to a Google+ Page from either the Google+ Page itself, or from whatsoever Google+ Profile that contend the Page in addition to channel.

Other updates on Google+ in addition to YouTube 2014

Of course of study at that topographic point were many to a greater extent than updates on Google+ in addition to YouTube this year.

The Twelvemonth Inwards Review 2015: Google For Content Creators, Collectors In Addition To Consumers

2015 was a busy yr at Google. Alphabet became the novel nurture fellowship alongside Google only ane of its subsidiaries, in addition to naturally that was followed yesteryear a novel Google logo. There were retirements (Helpouts), major launches (Google Photos, YouTube Gaming) in addition to large changes (Google+, Hangouts).

If y'all desire the large picture, read on in addition to depository fiscal establishment check out the 2015 timeline. I've also pose together to a greater extent than detailed overviews of the changes to Google+, Photos, Local Businesses in addition to Pages, YouTube for viewers, YouTube Creators in addition to Partners, live streaming, Hangouts, Blogger in addition to AdSense.

What happened inwards the Google universe inwards 2015?

announced that Google+ is no longer the "social layer" across Google products in addition to services. Instead it's going it alone, alongside a to a greater extent than "focused experience" in addition to an emphasis on content. To that end, 2015 saw the launch of Collections in addition to the ongoing separation of Photos, Hangouts, Local Businesses and YouTube from Google+. The yr is ending alongside a create novel Google+ user interface, withal nether development.
While Local Businesses are withal represented yesteryear Google+ Local Pages, at that spot has been an ongoing separation from Google+. In Oct the novel Google My Business dashboard (business.google.com/manage/) replaced the Google+ Pages dashboard. The novel Google+ profiles no longer display local concern reviews - those conduct hold moved to Google Maps.
launched equally a stand-alone service that doesn't require a Google+ profile. Since thus at that spot conduct hold been a number of improvements in addition to updates, such equally shared albums. The old Picasa Web Albums is non only withal around, but is currently the only identify to access albums created yesteryear other Google products such equally Google+ Photos from Posts, Blogger blogs, in addition to Hangouts.
YouTube Kids, YouTube Gaming (with an emphasis on alive broadcasting), YouTube Music in addition to the ad-free YouTube Red subscription service. And to a greater extent than sorts of videos are at nowadays supported: high frame charge per unit of measurement videos, 360-degree videos, in addition to VR video. And watching video on mobile got better, alongside a redesigned YouTube mobile app. Some of the improvements were smaller, but rattling welcome, similar the render of subscription grid sentiment on desktop.
separation of YouTube from Google+, starting alongside comments, thus Google+ Profile-connected channels. That procedure is ongoing.

YouTube Analytics got novel tools for analyzing views in addition to engagement, in addition to mobile-friendly Cards were introduced to eventually supercede Annotations. YouTube Spaces for creators opened inwards Berlin and Mumbai. Plus novel video options shape 360 videos to improved alive streaming, in addition to potentially higher earnings shape YouTube Red subscribers.
2015 was also the yr Live Streaming came to the masses. Mobile streaming apps Periscope in addition to Meerkat launched, YouTube offered slow broadcasting for gamers from both the desktop in addition to mobile devices, Twitch.tv expanded beyond gaming, Blab permit y'all flow your conversations in addition to fifty-fifty Facebook has gotten into the act. Alas, Hangouts on Air didn't larn whatever major updates.
Hangouts got a habitation of its ain at hangouts.google.com but was removed from the novel Google+ desktop interface. The Chrome Hangouts app for desktop got a major update alongside Mac support. And non-event video calls were streamlined, alongside the removal of most apps. The mobile Hangouts app for Android in addition to iOS got a number of updates in addition to improvements, including - finally! - grouping MMS.
Blogger added slow integration alongside Google Domains, banned - for a curt fourth dimension - nudity in addition to porn, introduced novel layout in addition to template options in addition to HTTPS security.
AdSense made it easier to apply for an account, introduced novel ways to earn (Consumer Surveys in addition to Matched Content), redesigned Performance Reports in addition to offers to a greater extent than transparency nigh Payments. And y'all tin #AskTheAdSenseGuy policy questions!

    2015 Review: Google+

Google+ is neither dead, nor dying. But it's also no longer the "social layer" across Google products. If y'all were watching closely y'all may conduct hold seen this alter coming.

In an became clear: Google+ would no longer render an identity across Google products (especially YouTube). Instead, Google+ would go to a greater extent than focused on "shared interests" in addition to content. Bradley Horowitz explained how was a goodness thing:
What does this hateful for Google+ the product? Relieved of the notion of integrating alongside every other production at Google, Google+ tin at nowadays focus on doing what it’s already doing quite well: helping millions of users around the footing connect around the involvement they love. Aspects of the production that don’t serve this agenda conduct hold been, or volition be, retired. But you’ll also run across a slew of improvements that create this role illustration shine (like the recent launch of Collections -plus.google.com/collections/featured).
There is fifty-fifty an official Google+ Collections Community meant to assist users create featurable Collections.

And inwards Nov Google+ launched an entirely novel spider web interface that "puts Collections in addition to Communities front end in addition to center". It's withal a preview, in addition to Google+ is gathering user feedback, but it's clear it's much simpler than "classic" Google+.

Will the novel Google+ live a success? Only fourth dimension volition tell.

2015 Review: Google for Local Businesses in addition to Brand Pages

Google+ is no longer the identify for customers in addition to clients to discovery in addition to review businesses. Google+ local search was retired, in addition to the options for finding in addition to reviewing local businesses conduct hold moved to Google Maps in addition to Google Search.

The changes don't only behave upon Local Pages. The novel Google My Business dashboard (business.google.com/manage/) replaced the Google+ Pages dashboard (plus.google.com/dashboard) for both Brand Pages in addition to Local Pages. If y'all conduct hold a number of Pages that agency having to switch betwixt GMB in addition to Google+.

The novel Google+ hasn't been fully implemented for Pages yet, but the focus has clearly changed. Currently the novel profiles don't display links or a description, in addition to Local Pages don't conduct hold a Reviews tab. That may change, but it's clear the focus volition live content posted on Google+.

Will businesses require a Local Google+ Page inwards the future? Google hasn't said, but I wouldn't live surprised if they don't.

2015 Review: Updates for YouTube Creators

In outflow 2012 YouTube began offering novel users the selection to create a channel connected to Google+. That was the showtime of the long procedure of integrating YouTube alongside Google+. In July, after several years of annoyance in addition to confusion, Google announced the separation of YouTube from Google+.

Bradley Horowitz acknowledged that the procedure had non gone well:
Four years agone when nosotros conceived of the “Google+ Project”, nosotros made it clear that our goals were ever two-fold: Google+ aspired to live both a “platform layer that unified Google’s sharing models”, in addition to a production / flow / app inwards its ain right.
This was a well-intentioned goal, but equally realized it led to some production experiences that users sometimes found confusing. For instance, in addition to possibly most controversially, integration alongside YouTube implied that leaving a comment on YouTube (something users had patently been doing successfully for years) of a abrupt in addition to unexpectedly required “joining Google+.”
The foremost alter was to YouTube comments, which has gotten a mixed response - it turns out some users liked sharing their comments to Google+, especially equally that allowed collecting your ain comments inwards ane place.

Since thus the dis-integration procedure has been dull but steady, in addition to it's now possible to conduct hold a full-featured channel that is non connected to Google+.  But the procedure is non consummate - Google+ Pages are withal needed for channels alongside a concern or other name. And custom URLs, notifications nether the bell in addition to  other features are withal subject on Google+.

It's been a dull process, but 2016 should run across YouTube channels gratis of Google+, hopefully alongside some improvements inwards comment, PM in addition to channel management.

Beyond that, YouTube Analytics got novel tools for analyzing views (realtime data!), engagement, in addition to earnings. Mobile-friendly Cards were introduced equally an eventual replacement for mobile-unfriendly annotations. Plus Creator Credits to admit collaborations in addition to translation tools to widen your audience.

And all the novel video options for viewers are opportunities for creators, including 360-degree videos, high frame charge per unit of measurement videos, in addition to improved alive streaming for both gamers in addition to other broadcasters.

2015 was the yr that alive streaming - peculiarly mobile alive streaming - came to the masses. And piece at that spot weren't whatever major updates to Hangouts on Air this year, HOAs should exercise goodness from improvements made to the alive streaming scheme dorsum terminate too.

My promise is that inwards 2016 either Google volition innovate a mobile alive streaming app or a tertiary political party (like Telestream) volition develop a mobile streaming for Android that is integrated alongside YouTube.

      2015 Review: AdSense

Influenza A virus subtype H5N1 large alter for AdSense this yr is a novel spirit of transparency. John Brown, caput of AdSense Publisher Policy Communications has been posting on the official AdSense blog in addition to fifty-fifty an  #AskTheAdSenseGuy column at Search Engine Journal. This is the novel philosophy:
We realize that nosotros tin improve our communications, especially around warnings, suspensions, in addition to concern human relationship disablement.  My accuse is to exercise this. I conduct hold many people working alongside me on amend education, along alongside improving the linguistic communication in addition to instructions around warnings or messages received from Google. I believe that publishers sympathise much amend where they stand upwards at all times when our policies are clear in addition to when nosotros communicate them effectively, in addition to enforce consistently.
Influenza A virus subtype H5N1 measurement inwards that direction: AdSense Payment History at nowadays displays invalid activeness deductions.

For potential Publishers they have simplified the application process.

For established Publishers at that spot are novel ways to earn - Consumer Surveys, Matched Content, Google Contributor - addition novel richer text ads in addition to updated mobile text ads.

There are also improved functioning in addition to revenue profile reports, in addition to a redesigned mobile app.

Too complicated? Hire a Certified Publishing Partner to assist deal your account.

And hopefully earnings volition ascent inwards 2016!
